Cannabis Users Drink Less and Have Fewer Alcohol-Related Problems

Compared to those without medical cannabis recommendations, cannabis users with medical cannabis recommendations had 0.59 times fewer drinks per day

A new study came to the conclusion that cannabis users with medical cannabis recommendations drink less and have fewer alcohol-related problems than those without recommendations, even after adjusting for health status.

Compared to those without medical cannabis recommendations, cannabis users with medical cannabis recommendations had 0.59 times fewer drinks per day, 0.44 times fewer occasions drinking 5 or more drinks, and 0.78 times the average maximum number of drinks in one day.

The study’s findings show the dangers of marijuana may have been overestimated in the past, while the risk of alcohol has been commonly underestimated. According to the Center for Disease Control, one in ten deaths among working-age adults can be attributed to excessive alcohol use, and alcohol poisonings account for more than 2,000 American deaths every year.

Meanwhile, most experts say there has never been a documented death from marijuana use in someone without an underlying condition.
